Springfield elementary school children now have the opportunity to taste what East Asia has to offer. This year, the Springfield Peace Center and Wittenberg's Freeman Grant have brought Chinese culture, as well as conflict management, into six kindergarten classrooms.
Students have the opportunity to taste almond cookies and other Chinese foods, say words and count numbers in Chinese, learn about Chinese families and schools, and learn Chinese stories from Hong and Jing, two Chinese puppets.
The I Care Catâ„¢ is also teaching the "I Care" rules of listening to each other, understanding that hands are for helping, not hurting, using "I Care" language, are caring about others' feelings. It is a great way to open a different part of the world to Springfield students. The students get excited and say "hello" in Chinese when the Peace Center instructors arrive with Chinese puppets, I Care Catâ„¢, well-crafted posters, and bright smiles.
A Wittenberg student who is taking Community service 100 noted, "I don't know if I make their day or they make mine."
