Every year, a group of individuals arrive to campus before school starts to help new students settle in for their long haul over the next four years. This important group of students are the Orientation Assistants (OAs). To the nervous, anxious, incoming freshmen, the best thing next to their parents for life support can be the OAs, and these students are glad to help.
OAs fill many roles in the few days before classes begin and the awkward silence of a new setting is broken. OAs help move incoming students in, chat about college life, and explain the ins and outs of life at Wittenberg. Their role as an OA has an impact, as it establishes the character of Wittenberg to the incoming class.
Cole Downs, who has been an OA the last two years--and is planning on returning for his third term--found his experiences as an OA a "nice way to come back and meet the freshman and hang out with people."
OAs return to school one week before classes begin and engage in seminars that help prepare them to educate the incoming class about the policies and procedures at Wittenberg. Finally, the new freshman class comes a few days before school. They have the opportunity to meet with their OA groups and their faculty advisor for the first time.
In the few days that follow before the start of classes, OAs interact and establish bonds with the students in their OA groups. They participate in various activities around campus (including Play-fair), which help settle new students in for their first year of college. Ultimately, the OAs are responsible for introducing the new students to Wittenberg.
Applications for the latest round of OAs were due Feb. 8.
