Theatre and dance enthusiasiasts were a few of many gathered to represent their organization at the activities fair in Shouvlin Center last Thursday.

Stormy skies forced the annual Wittenberg Activities Fair indoors this past Thursday, August 30.

Tables lined the halls of both floors of Shouvlin Center and the upper level of the student center. A large room in Shouvlin was also filled up with student leaders at booths hoping to interest students in their favorite pasttimes.

New students as well as upperclassmen filed in, dodging frisbees and grabbing t-shirts and candy, until the building was full. Though slightly chaotic, and crammed because of the location change, the fair went smoothly and many club e-mail lists were full at the end of the two hours and 45 minutes.

Greek tables showed off their best assets, Ski Club got a good start on their petition, and Rugby Football Club players rucked in plenty of new recruits. There was an air of excitement throughout the event.

Perhaps most popular feature of this bustling event was the piles of free food. Chicken fingers, corndogs, pulled pork, and funnel cakes were gobbled up quickly. The cotton candy machine certainly got a workout as students loaded up on the purple, blue, and pink sugary treat.

Wittenberg faculty and staff got in on the action, too. Behind the serving lines stood several well-known faces around campus such as Dean Carolyn Perkins, Athletic Director Garnett Purnell, and Director of Student Activities Mark DeVilbiss, with tongs readily in hand.

Students chowed down on the deliciously free dinner while they signed up for more information on many clubs, sports, and other activities available on campus. The outlook is positive for many student leaders who had hoped for increased numbers within their groups.

The 2006 Activities Fair was a successful start to what is hoped to be a very successful year at Wittenberg.
