Expecting nothing less than success, the Wittenberg volleyball team has shown that they are the dominant team in the NCAC. The Tigers are heading into the remaining third of their season, with only five matches left before the conference tournament. Their next matches are against Earlham, Allegheny, Urbana, conference rival Hiram, and Mount Union. The Tigers have won the NCAC tournament title consecutively for the last nine years.

In most recent action, the Tigers competed in three matches at home over the weekend of October 21. The Tigers won all of these matches 3-0, and kept alive their now eight game win streak. In their first game against Oberlin, it was all Wittenberg, and this time freshman players came up big for the Tigers. Freshman Kendall Obreza recorded five aces, while freshman Alison Thompson had 10 kills. The freshman leadership enabled the Tigers to defeat the Yeowomen for their twelfth conference win this season.

Their second game was against the fighting Scots of Wooster, yet another potential conference contender. Similar to their first game, the Tigers defeated the Scots in three matches, 30-27, 30-15, and 30-21. The Scots put up a good fight, but could not compete with the Tigers and their ongoing win streak. This time it was the junior and sophomore class putting forth the necessary effort for the win. With sophomore Jessica Kimble and junior Jan Kehres both getting 10 kills, junior Emily Bell and sophomore Jackie Williams recording seven kills, and junior Caitlin Augustus finishing with four blocks, the Tigers were a force to be reckoned with.

The biggest game by far was the non-conference match up between the Tigers and the Mt. St. Joseph Lions. The Lions, who are also ranked nationally, gave the Tigers somewhat of a challenge, but in the end could not top the Tigers. Also defeating the Lions 3-0, the Tigers relied on their strong defense in order to gain the win. Bell had 26 digs, sophomore libero Laura Fender had 25 digs, and Kimble had four blocks for the Tigers. The defensive mode of the Tigers enabled them to defeat the Lions, 30-23, 30-18, and 30-24.

The Tigers will need to keep up their team efforts and defensive play as they head into their annual Fall Classic, and the NCAC conference tournament. One of the major foes that the Tigers will encounter is the Terriers of Hiram. The Terriers, who gave the Tigers their only conference loss last year on their way to a conference title, are second in the NCAC and always prove to be a challenge. The Tigers have already defeated them once this year at the end of September, winning 3-0.

If the volleyball team continues to play well and at the accelerated pace they are, then they may be on track to repeat the success of last season, and go deep into the National tournament.
