The season's first holiday treat was offered by the Wittenberg Singers on Saturday afternoon in Weaver Chapel. The concert showcased both traditional and secular holiday favorites as well as other non-holiday classics.
The stage was full with the 44 women singers who belong to the choir. The group is under the direction of Carol Todd, an adjunct instructor of music. Accompanying the choir was adjunct instructor Diane Slagle.
Conductor Todd explained that the choir consisted of music majors and many also "singing simply for the enjoyment of singing."
The program was separated into three parts; with different musical styles being offered in each. The opening part of the program was devoted to olden hymns including Mozart's "Alleluja," featuring soprano soloist Kathryn Brunson.
Todd also presented a solo with the lively song "How Excellent is thy Name, O Lord."
The second section of the concert included selections from Britten's "Ceremony of Carols." Also the Wittonians ensemble sang a barbershop style "Twas the Night Before Christmas."
Final selections were lively holiday favorites like "Holly Jolly Christmas" and "Jingle Bell Rock." Alto soloist Natalie Banks sang lead for the song "All is Well." Also soloing was alto Lisa Adams with a song from "The Phantom of the Opera" "Wishing you were somehow here again."
Ending the afternoon concert the group sang the traditional spiritual "Dry Bones."
