A fresh new DJ service is in town, and they've got plenty more songs other than "Promiscuous." 18,000 more, to be exact. And their going price is about a third of the cheapest Springfield professionals'. It's "DJ Beta," and they're right here on campus.
The Beta Theta Pi house has had DJs available for hire since the beginning of the 2006-2007 school year. They provide DJ services and their own equipment, including two concert-quality Cerwin-Vega high to mid-speakers and a PeaVey low speaker that "kicks out a lot of sound," according to senior John Strawn, a member of Beta Theta Pi and the service's head DJ.
"At our last party, I was all the way down the hallway in a different part of the house and I could feel the bass from the speaker," said Strawn. "It's good equipment."
DJ Beta has worked several on-campus events, from sorority semi-formals to the Student Senate Tiger Tailgate this fall. One member of Kappa Delta, senior Trish Grebenstein, agrees that the sound quality "absolutely" was good at her house's semi-formal.
Strawn and the Betas helped start the service after they worked two philanthropy events free of charge. The events were a success and the Betas had fun doing it.
"I love dealing with the equipment and I love setting it all up, but I'm also a music lover," said Strawn, ticking off song titles and artists easily. "Any excuse to be involved is welcome."
The Betas turned the service into a way for their house to make a little bit of money because "the house really needed new equipment." The Betas were recently able to buy a new amplifier with the money they've made so far.
"It's a service that's advantageous for us because we get to upgrade our equipment," said Strawn. "Yet, it's also advantageous anyone who hires us."
