Things to do over winter break to start or continue the job or internship search:
- Schedule informational interviews with family friends
- Learn about job options and opportunities available in your field, however, do not use this as a time to ask for a job.
- Research different companies and contact them for opening positions.
"As along as you are willing to put in the effort to interview and network, there's definitely a job market out there," Ashley Hall says in the Nov. 27 USA Today.
There are many job opportunities available, but students need to take the time to search, talk with the people working in the specific field, and network! The Career Center has conducted networking and informational interview workshops and will be holding more in January so keep checking the Career Center calendar.
Do not feel that Christmas break should just be a time for seniors to begin their job search. According to USA Today, "some colleges and universities are seeing more employers offering internship programs for current students: Employers extended job offers to more than 70 percent of their interns" (found in a separate study by NACE). Students should also use this break as a time to search for internships related to their career fields. For any student, an internship provides valuable experience and may lead to a future job offer.
It is never too early to start researching and networking.
So make Winter Break your time to begin!
In addition to the Winter Break search, attend the OFIC Career Fair on Friday, Feb. 2 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This Columbus career fair will host more than 100 employers searching for applicants to fill their positions. You need to pre-register at the Career Center (201 Shouvlin) to make check-in much easier; registering is free. Go online to view a list of participating employers at www.ofic.org/careerfest/index.html.
If you have other questions about job and internship searching or the OFIC Career Fair, please contact the Career Center in 210 Shouvlin, or call (937) 327-7521.
