Spring semester is not only a return to homework and dorm life, but also the start of a new season of Greek recruitment. Anyone could tell by the plethora of well dressed freshman men and women tromping through snow banks on their way to formal recruitment events that it was rush season once again.
Out of the 650 registered freshmen at Wittenberg, a staggering 174 women and 106 men registered for recruitment this spring. This turn out not only speaks volumes to the large class of 2010, but also to the great lengths that each chapter took in order to spread the word about Greek life.
Shelley Reynolds, Wittenberg director of Greek life, attributes the increase in interest level to the extra effort each chapter put forth, especially the men.
"Each chapter did an excellent job by providing detailed information and many also held pre-recruitment activities," said Reynolds.
With the increased interest, the last week was full of excitement and anxiety as the potential new members were stretched to their limits in order to find out more about what Greek life at Wittenberg is about.
On the female side, the structure and organization of the week helps to keep equality through the sororities. Each potential member is able to make an informed decision by getting to experience each house as an equal.
"It is a mutual selection process, which is a hard concept for potential members to grasp," said Reynolds.
In order to keep with the national Pan-Hellenic system, sororities seek to give equal chances to each girl and therefore must impose chapter ceilings and release requirements throughout recruitment. Because of these rules, many times potential new members are disappointed and don't follow through with the remainder of recruitment. Out of the total girls registered, about 70 did not sign bid cards.
"The potential members must keep an open mind and trust that the houses make the right choice," said Reynolds, expressing disappointment in the large number of girls that withdrew.
This week, the freshmen men found a different approach to recruitment as they were treated to the likes of steak and Chipotle for dinner. This may be deemed as unfair, but with separate philosophies between the fraternity and sorority life entirely, each were able to meet their goals for this recruitment season, said Reynolds.
Although this spring brought upon unplanned systematic problems with the computers, the overall outcome of formal recruitment 2007 was positive.
"It gave us stumbling blocks but overall did not negatively impact many and benefited some others," said Reynolds. With many potential members now proudly sporting letters around campus, formal recruitment proved to be a testament to the growing support of Greek life at Wittenberg.
