Having lost only two conference games all season, to Ohio Wesleyan and arch-rival Wooster, the men's basketball team had a lot to prove as they faced their familiar nemesis, Wooster, on the road. With an almost sell-out crowd, and the Wooster crowd engaging in its normal class-less antics, the Wittenberg men's basketball team came out from the very beginning ready to play.
The Tigers led almost the entire game, and at one point had a 15 point lead over the Fighting Scots. Wooster would not give up that easily as they came back and narrowed Wittenberg's lead to 40-34 going into halftime.
The second half was very similiar to the first as Wittenberg tended to dominate play. The real turning point of the game was with two minutes to go, whenWooster tied the game for the first time.
Wooster's reigning NCAC Player of the Year James Cooper was the key factor to the Scots comeback. But, Cooper's work could not do it all as he turned the ball over into the hands of Wittenberg guard Gregg Hill. With a little over ten second s to go, Hill hit a jumper to give the Tigers the three point lead. That three point edge lasted as the Tigers ended up defeating the Scots in a thriller on their home court, 74-71. The win was truley a team effort as points, rebounds and assists were evenly distributed throughout the team. Leading all scorers was Hill as he brought in 21 points. Other key contributors for the Tigers were senior Dane Borchers with seven points and nine rebounds, while senior Jack Hemenway and junior Brandan Barabino each posted nine points in the Tigers' victory. With this win, the Tigers move one game behind Wooster, and one step closer to capturing the regular season NCAC title.
The Tigers' next game is against Hiram on Sat., Feb. 10.
