Even though the groundhog didn't see his shadow this year, spring didn't come early as promised; in fact, all Springfield has witnessed an indecisive Mother Nature. Only now, as March comes to a close, can Wittenberg students finally gear up-literally-for the oncoming warm days of spring.
During a short stint of 60-degree weather last week, many Wittenberg students got out one of their favorite springtime garments-flip-flops.
"I like them because they're all different colors and all different patterns," said senior Erin Robinson on these thong-style, often lightweight, sandals nicknamed flip-flops for the sounds the shoes make against the bottom of one's heel while walking. "And, of course, because they're comfortable."
While comfort is key to many Wittenberg students, there are many women who are just glad for the simplicity of spring clothing. With every additional color and pattern of flip-flops, it gets a little bit easier to find the right shoes to put together an outfit, several students agreed.
Other students added that they enjoy spring sundresses and sunglasses for similar reasons of minimalism.
"Sundresses are great because it's one piece of clothing-you don't have to work hard to put an outfit together," said junior Claire Dickman. "And they're cute!"
Two other students, juniors Kelly Juravic and Holly Shaw, added that they like spring because they can hide behind "cute" sunglasses when they don't have time to get fully ready in the morning.
And the boys? Many Wittenberg men enjoy spring fashion simply for the sake of being able to wear shorts.
"The airflow is amazing," said sophomore Nate Deming, laughing.
Junior Joe Weeks, said he just likes to wear T-shirts without a jacket in the spring. And, of course, he and several Wittenberg men that agree with the flip-flop crowd.
"It's always nice to be able to put sandals on for the first time each year," said Weeks.
Wittenberg women agree with the boys on airflow. Junior Kathleen Soler said she likes to feel the breeze on her legs while sitting on the grass in the spring. A few students said they like Capri-style pants and Bermuda-style shorts, both which feature characteristic knee to upper-calf lengths, in the spring when it's not warm enough for shorts but too hot for long pants.
"I can't wait to wear those flowy skirts that come right to your knee," said freshman Katie Adams, adding that she loves to go to Old Navy to see the spring sales. "Skirts, skirts, skirts."
In a variety of pastel pinks and baby blues, spring clothing is coming out of hiding onto Wittenberg's ever-greener campus. And if you listen hard enough, you can hear every "flip" and "flop."
