Let's time travel to the year 2057. We will be in our 70's, quite a scary thought, and all the stress we put on our bodies is finally catching up with us. Those of us who played one too many games of beer pong or took one too many Liquid Satan's to the face may be suffering from liver failure. Those of us who filled our lives with years of physical and emotional stress might have a heart that does not seem to work as well as before.
Problems such as these may be so serious that you need a new organ. Seems easy enough, but organ donor lists are very long. It is not unusual for a patient to wait years in anticipation of a new organ, some waiting so long that the patient dies before receiving the organ.
NEVER FEAR…the sheep are here?
Yes, those dirty wool covered farm animals could save your life one day. They are not training to be doctors or surgeons and they are without superpowers and capes. Instead these barnyard friends are incubating the thing that might save your life: Human organs.
Scientists have begun experimenting by injecting sheep organs with human DNA. The thought is that this will cause the organs to grow to the size, shape, etc. of a human organ.
I see a few things wrong with this new experiment.
One of the organs that the scientists have infused is the sheep's brain. As soon as I read this, I had a flashback to my 9th grade English class when we read "Animal Farm". Visions of mangy sheep declaring, "Four legs good, two legs bad," and overthrowing the human world seem to come to mind. What if all of these experiments go awry? With the majority of our troops in Iraq, I'm not sure we have the power to fight an evil army of super smart sheep.
Have the scientists thought about side effects? Sure the organs are half human, but that means the other half of the DNA is from the sheep. As your body begins to accept the organ, that means that the sheep DNA is also accepted. This could present some pretty interesting occurrences such as people covered in thick curly white hair, baaa-ing, and crawling around on all fours.
I'm all about living, but I think I would rather die than shear my body wool each season. In my opinion a half human organ just isn't worth it, especially considering the DNA is mixed with a farm animal. I understand that scientists want to research new ways to help and save people with fatal diseases but no matter how sick I am, I'm not getting in line anytime soon. No doubt about it, these half-human/half-sheep organs are bbbbaaaaaaa-d news!
