I first visited Wittenberg University two years ago during my junior year in high school. Wittenberg offered a beautiful campus and aesthically appealing buildings including Recitation Hall, the new dorm, and Hollenbeck Hall. The food wasn't that bad either for a college campus, or so I thought (Later, I discovered that the quality of food mysteriously seems to increase when prospective students and their parents come to look at a school). So what was missing? Well, the students. I had picked one of the worst times to visit in the year: Spring break. Practically everyone was gone, and at that point I didn't feel I could make a good evaluation of the school and whether it was right for me.
A couple of months later, I visited the campus again. School was in full session and I was finally able to get the full "feeling" of campus life. At the time of my arrival my overnight host was unable to pick me up. A few sorority girls allowed me to stay with them for a while and watch Grey's Anatomy. They were all welcoming and I couldn't help but feel even more satisfied at the sight of fudge, chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream, and whipped cream. Later, my real overnight host came to pick me up and I felt lucky because she was pretty nice too. There wasn't a lot to do that school night, but I was perfectly content watching the television as my host worked diligentlyon her homework.
The next day only got better. I was scheduled to sit in on a class called "Abnormal Psychology," and the topics of the day were sexual disorders. Lets just say that I wasn't bored and the teacher did a good job of instructing the students as well as answering questions. Throughout the day, I observed other teachers who really gave their attention to their students which really impressed me. After spending all day in class I was confident that the myriad of brochures admissions sent me weren't lying; the professors at Wittenberg are truly good at teaching.
Towards the end of my day, I still wasn't sure I was coming to Wittenberg. I admit, I wasn't one of those students who looked at the campus and thought "I love it, I want to come here." But the friendly people I met, the helpfulness of the teachers, and the upkeep of the buildings and campus made me leave with a good feeling. And most of those characteristics is what, in the end, led me to choose to Wittenberg.
