Seven months before the eagerly anticipated 2008 presidential elections, Wittenberg had an important election of its own. A record turnout and first-time online voting were the hallmarks of this year's Student Senate Elections, held Tuesday, April 8.
According to Dean of Students Sarah Kelly, 49 percent of the student body cast votes, which Kelly deemed in an email to all students "a huge success." She also noted that there were many close races and thanked all students who voted and ran for office.
In the weeks before the election, students were bombarded with advertisements for candidates in the most highly competitive positions, mostly on Senate Executive Committee. Buttons, t-shirts, and stickers were all sported by students enthusiastic about this year's election and candidates.
Jon Duraj and Lauren Bryan were elected Senate Executive Committee president and vice-president, respectively, while Katie Barsan will become treasurer and Matt McDonald will become secretary. Bobby Ritzi, class of 2010, will become the faculty/student coordinator.
The upcoming senior class results placed Andrew Tomko as class president, David Donofrio as vice-president, Kristy Parker as treasurer, and Lauren Hough as secretary. For the junior class, Leslie Chasteen will be class president, Corbin Nieke will be vice-president, Andrea Berry will be treasurer, and Betty Chaney will be secretary.
The class of 2011 voted Heather DeSantis president of its class, Mike Marian as vice-president, and Brendan Corrigan as treasurer. The position of secretary for the Class of 2011 is currently vacant.
Other elected Student Senate positions were decided Tuesday in the elections. Allison Scaia (Class of 2009) will be next year's Educational Policies senator, Nick Ferrari (2009) will be Public Relations senator, Ben McCombs (2009) will be off-campus senator, Corbin Neike (2010) will be Greek senator, and Jimmy Thinnes (Class of 2009) will become next year's Independent senator.
