Student Senate has decided to change and make it a priority this year to engage students and provide worthwhile events for the entire campus.

"In the past, Student Senate has had too much of an internal focus-it was very confusing," said Senate President Jon Duraj. "We spent much of last year fixing those problems and we are now ready to engage campus."

The goal of senate is to help fund, restructure, and oversee all student organizations and events. This year, senate leaders have created the Tiger Fund, a $35,000 pot for all student organizations to draw from for the 2008-2009 school year.

"In the past we were distributing our money out for t-shirts and food, nothing substantial," Duraj said. "Now, we want to spend the money on big events, programs, and speakers. All an organization has to do is apply for the money."

One of the projects senate has taken on this year is The New York Times Program, led by Assistant Professor Ed Hasecke in the Political Science Department. Among other things, they will provide a free trip to the inauguration for any student who can predict the exact electoral votes.

The recycling program is another task that senate wants to take more seriously this year. While Wittenberg has made strides in the past few years to improve recycling awareness on campus, senate wants to take the next step and turn words into actions.

"We plan to team up with the Green Witt movement and combine all our efforts," said Duraj. "We are willing to spend a substantial amount because we know how important this is."

The lower level of the Student Center is intended to be a place where students can enjoy recreational games, stop and check mail, or simply lounge around with friends. Unfortunately, it would probably be a stretch to say that the area gets used by ten students a day.

"The lower level is something students don't utilize," Duraj said. "We are gathering ideas right now about how to improve the game room, but in the very near future students should see a new flat screen TV such as in the HPER Center, a DVD player, a new sound system, a Nintendo Wii, new couches, and four fast computers."

Senate encourages students to give their own improvement ideas so that the lower level can develop into a popular place to hang out.

Other tasks for senate include an online syllabus database so that students have a better idea of what they're getting into when registering for classes, a blood donation battle next spring for the Witt/Wooster basketball game, and a sexual assault education campaign. The online syllabus database will be available by next registration details for the other events are forthcoming.

"It's really just a matter of getting out and discovering what students and organizations need," said Duraj. "We really want to get campus excited."
