Beginning on March 5, the Wittenberg Choir will embark on its 10-day music tour across five midwestern states. Under the direction of Professor of Music Donald Busarow, the 49-member group will visit Lutheran churches as well as others to sing a variety of music ranging from classical to gospel. They will even perform renditions of English poems that have been set to music.
"It is a diverse and appealing set," said Maureen Walsh, a senior and choir member.
Choir alumni Hannah Auxter, '06, and Brad Hall, '05, will be joining the tour. Bob White, Wittenberg's director of church relations, will also travel with the group and give a short presentation during each concert's intermission. White and Auxter plan to hand out Wittenberg admission materials and provide choir tour information.
The tour takes the choir across the U.S. Each year, it rotates to a different location. Next year, the choir will travel to New England. In 2011, group members will head southeast and in 2012, they plan to travel to either California or Florida. In 2013, the group will head back to the Midwest.
This year, their first stop will be in Vincennes, Ind. Then, it's off to spend a weekend in Illinois, performing in Chicago, River Forest, and Glen Ellyn, where they will help celebrate Sunday services. The rest of the trip will be spent in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Ohio.
Although it may not be a typical college Spring Break trip, choir members are excited about their journey.
"It's a lot of hard work but we have fun times in between," said one choir member, who wished to remain anonymous.
Some are also looking forward to meeting up with family members who live in the surrounding Midwest area.
For seniors, the tour marks an end to their Wittenberg Choir experience. But it is a memorable one.
"It is bittersweet that it is my last tour," said Walsh. "It's really a fun and rewarding experience. I will cherish these memories forever."
Katie Hubert, a senior, also agrees.
"It's sad, but nice," she said. "It's an accomplishment to have been here for four years."
